Haflong hill Travel Guide

Haflong, the only hill station of Assam is situated at an altitude of 680 m from the sea level. Also known as White Ant Hillock In Dimsa( the main language in Assam) Haflong means White Ant Hillock), it is the district Head Quarter of North Cachar Hills, one of the 23 districts of Assam. Haflong is about 345 km from Guwahati, the capital of Assam. The natural beauty makes Haflong a place worth more than a visit. It also has a colonial history like most of the other hill stations in India and one can still find the remains of British rule in the architecture of some of the buildings. 

Apart from its scenic beauty, the hills of Haflong is also known for its more than 2 lakh different flowers include the orchids such as Blue Vanda, rare species of birds, Pineapple, Pera, Peaches, and Oranges. There is a Orchid Garden in Haflong which is a worth visit. Haflong is often referred to as the land of blue hills. This calm and tiny hill station with blue hills, rivers and waterfalls is sitll untouched by tourism. Inhabitants of Haflong generally include the Dimasa, the Jema Nagas, Hmars, the Hrankhols, Biates, Vaipheis, Karbis, Jaintia, Khelmas and Thadou Kukies tribes. Pineapple and oranges are grown here in abundance. Haflong has a lovely lakeside resort developed in the lavish green hills around the town. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy trekking on the Borail range, hang-gliding and paragliding. Watching the traditional dances of the Tribals is the other tourist attractions in Haflong.

Jatinga is at a glance for mysterious migratory birds, is situated about 20 km to the south of Haflong is a heart-touching sight for tourists. It is famous for being a mysterious spot where thousands of migratory birds commit suicide between August and November every year. Tourist can enjoy the beautiful scenic of sunrise from the Hempeopet peak near Jatinga. It also provides a bird watching centre in Jatinga, with accomodation fascility permitted by the district forestry office of Haflong. Best Time to Visit


Haflong Hill experiences a very pleasant weather all year around which makes it a prime tourist spot of Assam. In summers, the temperatures go as high up as 31 degree Celsius. Winter, i.e., October to March, is a comfortable season to visit Haflong Hill when the temperature ranges from 10 to 23 degree Celsius.


How to Reach


Haflong hill is located in south Assam not very far from the city of Silchar. The nearest airport is the one at Silchar (Kumbhirgram Airport) about 108 kilometres away. The drive is likely to take about three hours. The only bus service to Haflong Hill is from Silchar. If you are keen to travel like the locals, you can take the state bus. However, the journey is not likely to be a comfortable one. Renting a car is a recommended option. Alternatively, you may want to board one of the two direct trains from Silchar to Haflong. The journey might be tedious but Haflong Hill’s beauty is certainly worth it.
