Sivasagar sivadol Travel Guide

Sivasagar Sivadol is a group of structures comprising three Hindu temples of Sivadol, Visnudol and Devidol, other shrines, and a museum. These are located on the banks of the Sivasagar tank, also known as the Borpukhuri tank. The tank was constructed between 1731 and 1738 and the temples were built in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, queen of Ahom king Swargadeo Siba Singha (1714–1744). The height of the Sivadol (dol means temple in Assamese) is 104 feet (32 m) and the perimeter is 195 feet (59 m) at the base. It is crowned with an 8-foot (2.4 m) high golden-dome.

Sibsagar, present day Sivasagar, was the capital of Ahom kingdom. The Ahoms had migrated from South China in 1228 and established their first capital at Charaideo 28 kilometres (17 mi) from present day Sivsagar in 1253. Initially they were Buddhists, though Hinduism came to prevail. It was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom till the British Raj was established in India. The tank was constructed between 1731 and 1738 and the temples were built in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, queen of Ahom king Swargadeo Siba Singha.

One of the tallest Shiva(Hindu God) temple in the world. Built 300 years back. Center of attraction for all tourists for its gigantic architectural and religious values. Maha Shivaratri is the most celebrated puja of this temple. Thousands of devotees come to the temple in the Shivaratri. Another attraction is 'Hare Krishna' kirton in the month of 'Shawan'.

The word 'Dole' means temple in Assamese. All the three were built by Queen Ambika, wife of King Shiva Singha, in the year 1734. It is not only one of the most sacred place in North-East India, also the beauty of the place beyond words with three temples standing tall by the bank of a large pond 'Sivasagar Tank'. Shiva Dol is 180 feet tall and 195 feet in diameter. It is caped seven feet high large Golden Dome, called 'Kolosi', on the topmost part of the dole. The walls of the temple are sculptured with statues of numerous HinduGods and Goddesses. The other two great doles in the same campus are Vishnu Dole and Devi Dole. Shiva Dole is pride of not only Sivasagar but also of whole Assam. This giant temple is located few feet higher than the normal town level. It is visible from most of the corners of the small town, that adds real charm to the whole town. Every year these temples attract many national and international tourists to the town.

Unlikely any other popular Hindu Temple across India, Shive Dole carries less crowded and very calm ambience. The temple is a real place of religion and peace.
