Established in the 1980s, Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum showcases different aspects of tribal life in Arunachal Pradesh. It also exhibits the natural heritage of the state, and thus it is quite an interesting tourist attraction in Itanagar. One can witness everything from woodcarvings to handicrafts, and musical instruments to textiles here. The ground floor of the museum has an extensive ethnographic collection, including traditional art, religious objects, musical instruments, and handicrafts, and cane products, which are reckoned to have been found during excavation at Ita Fort, Noksparbat and Malinithan in West Siang district. Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum has a rich collection of textiles, weaponry, household articles and handicrafts. The museum reflects the tribal culture and heritage of Arunachal Pradesh. There is a special section, which displays the archaeological finding at the state. The museum also houses an informative library, which is open for the public.

Apart from this, the museum runs a workshop for traditional cane products at its Handicrafts Centre and a museum shop sells tribal handicrafts. In 2011, Tapi Mra who is reckoned to be the first person from the state to climb Mt. Everest, donated his entire expedition gear to the museum.
