The Marble Palace in Thakurpukur is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city of Kolkata and is visited by tourists from far and away, all through the year. The palace, built in Neoclassical style, is very well known for its architecture, and its vast collection of sculptures, furnishings and paintings. The Palace is a delight for anybody who appreciates good architecture and art. Built adjacent to the Marble Palace, lies the Marble Palace Zoo, the first of its kind to be opened in India, which also adds to the popularity of the palace. It was built in the year 1835 by Raja Rajendra Mullick and parts of the mansion are still occupied by his descendants. It closely resembles the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Visitors get to admire grand chandeliers, magnificent sculptures, coveted paintings of Indian and international artists along with amazing Victorian-era architecture while taking a guided tour of the property.
