Digholi pukhuri Travel Guide

The city of Guwahati has a beautiful man-made pond which is rectangular in shape and is named as the Digholi Pukhuri. The history attached to this pond says that is was created by Bhagadatta who constructed it by digging a canal from River Brahmaputra. This canal was used by the Ahoms as the naval yard during the ancient times. Today it is one of the prominent tourist spots of the city where you can enjoy boat rides and other recreational activities. There is also a children park within the lake complex. The couples have a gala time here sitting beside the lake and spending some time with their loved ones.

Dighalipukhuri, also known as Dighalipukhri is a rectangular man-made pond in Guwahati, Assam. Dighalipukhuri consisting of a pond and a garden spans an area between 17-18 bigha. It is located near Guwahati city, at a distance of 6-7 Kms from city centre. 

This name is derived from two Assamese word: Dighol meaning long and Pukhuri meaning lake. According to legend, the pond was created by Bhagadatta by digging a canal from the Brahmaputra river. In historical times, it was used by the Ahoms as a naval yard. Its access to the Brahmaputra was eventually closed, and during colonial times, that portion was further filled on which the Circuit House was built. Later, the Gauhati High Court building too was built in the newly filled area.
