The temple was probably constructed in the 1583 by King Rudradeva Narayan, or according to some historians, built in the 6th century by a king of the Pala dynasty. Moreover, according to one Buddhist belief, the temple is the place where the Buddha attained Nirvana. Thus, it is an equally interesting religious site for both the Buddhists as well as the Hindus.

Mainly Assamese and people belonging to the Hajong tribes reside in Hajo. If you are interested in religious or historical sites, then Hajo could be an important place as it hosts some well known temples and a place known as one quarter of Mecca - the holy place of the Muslims. Other tourist attractions of the place include mosque, which is known as Powa Mecca, or ‘One Quarter of the Mecca’ or Poa Mecca (1/4th Mecca). With the sanctity of Mecca, this mosque is believed to have been built by the same soil used in making the mosque in Mecca. Atop the Garurachal Hill, it is the pious tomb of Pir Giasuddin Auliya, the founder name of Islam in South Asian countries. Poa Mecca was built by Sujauddin Mohammed Shah in 1657 AD, during the reign of Mughal Emperor, Shahjahan.
